OK - apologies - this may be a little dry - but it's a subject that is INCREDIBLY close to our hearts at WeeRide - if you'd told me that a couple of years ago I wouldn't have believed you!
We face an almost daily fight against "AS/NZS 4287:1995 Child carrier seats for pedal bicycles - Safety requirements" the Australian Standard that many people mistakenly think is a legal requirement (it's not), was created by the government (it wasn't) and therefore that our seat is illegal (it's not). This is one of the main reasons you don't see the WeeRide in as many bicycle stores as we'd like - despite the continual super-high levels of customer satisfaction.
OK... so still with me...sorry - needed to give you the context.
Today - by chance I found this...'DR 09026 Pedal bicycles - Safety requirements' which is the new draft standard for bicycles in Australia....not immediately clear why this would be quite so exciting - well - I searched on 'carrier" and found the following 3 references;
1.) The limitation on projections on the bicycle in front of the rider relaxed for front-of-rider child carrier seats and water bottle provision.
2.) Child carrier seats meeting an appropriate Australian or New Zealand Standard which are mounted in front of the rider are exempt from the requirements of this Clause.∗
3.) ∗ At the time of publication of this Standard, there were no AS nor NZS Standards for front mounted child carrier seats.
Call me an optimist if you must - but I read this as very positive - they have created a new bicycle standard that doesn't preclude front-of-rider mounted seats and they go on to state that "At the time of publication of this Standard, there were no AS nor NZS Standards for front mounted child carrier seats." implying there in future they may be one and also that AS/NZS 4287:1995 doesn't apply.
Of course - no doubt we'll have to ensure that the WeeRide complies with this standard when it's written....
